The four things that decide it
Age, fault type, parts availability, and whether the system still matches itself. Age matters because a system that has run through fifteen or more Florida cooling seasons has salt-fatigued coil fins, tired contactors, and a compressor that has done its miles. Fault type matters more. A failed capacitor, a burnt contactor, a clogged condensate line, or a bad blower motor are ordinary air conditioner repair work on almost any age of system. A leaking evaporator coil, a seized compressor, or a cracked line set is a different conversation. Parts availability decides whether the repair is even possible. Matching decides whether the repair lasts.
How we work through it on the visit
We find the actual fault first. No one should be talking about replacement before the failure is identified, because a system that will not start can be a control board, a float switch doing its job, or a breaker. Once we know what broke, we tell you what it takes to fix it and what else on the system is close behind. If the compressor is fine and the cabinet is solid, we repair. If we are replacing a major component on a system with two or three other worn parts and a corroded coil, we say so plainly and let you choose.
Parts availability and refrigerant type
Some older systems use a refrigerant that is no longer produced, and some use components that are simply no longer made. When that happens, a repair can still be done, but it depends on salvaged or remaining stock, and the next failure may have no fix at all. We check this before quoting anything, because there is no sense repairing a system that cannot be repaired twice. If your system runs an obsolete refrigerant and the leak is in the coil, replacement is usually the honest recommendation. We will tell you which refrigerant yours uses and what that means.
Matching: why a mismatched swap causes trouble
An air conditioner is two halves working as one. If the outdoor unit fails and gets replaced with something newer while the indoor coil and air handler stay, the pairing may be wrong on capacity, metering device, or airflow. A mismatched system can cool, but it tends to run long, ice up, or short-cycle, and small faults keep coming back. When only one half has failed on an older setup, we look hard at whether replacing both halves gives you a system that behaves. Sometimes it does not matter. Often it does.
Honest cases where replacement wins
A compressor failure on a system past its expected life. A leaking evaporator coil on an obsolete refrigerant. A cabinet where the coil, the drain pan, and the base have gone to rust from years of salt air. Repeated repairs in one season on the same system. And any case where the repair costs a real fraction of a new system while leaving the rest of it worn. On the other side, a system under about ten years old with one clear failed part is almost always worth repairing. We would rather fix yours than sell you something.

Is there an age where you stop repairing an AC?
No hard cutoff. Past roughly fifteen Florida cooling seasons we look harder at the whole system, but a healthy older unit with one failed part still gets repaired. The fault type matters more than the birthday.
My AC needs refrigerant added every year. Is that a repair?
That is a leak, not a top-up. Refrigerant does not get used up. We locate the leak and tell you where it is. A leak in an accessible joint is repairable, and a leaking coil often is not worth it.
Can I replace just the outdoor unit?
Sometimes, and sometimes it causes ongoing problems. It depends on whether the new outdoor unit matches your indoor coil and air handler on capacity and metering. We check the pairing before recommending a partial replacement.
